UTAGAWA SHOKOKU

UTAGAWA Shokoku is an artist and researcher of Van Gogh.

 

He has exhibited his works alongside ukiyo-e prints from the Edo period (1603 – 1867) at the Hermitage as well as other museums in the world.

 

Utagawa Shokoku endeavours to illustrate the relation between Japanese culture and the Impressionist paintings.  He has translated and interpreted the japanese characters on the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh. 

 

In 2003, he was conferred “Chevalier de l’ordre des arts and des letters” in France.
